Lake Imaging is playing a vital role in ensuring that women in the Geelong region have local
access to the best possible medical expertise and technology. This Tuesday 19th September,
the new facility, containing the latest breast screening technology, will be launched at 78
Gheringhap Street, Geelong.
Lake Imaging is auspicing Geelong and South West BreastScreen. The service was at risk
of being lost in Geelong, however Lake Imaging have come to the rescue, making the new
facility a reality by providing clinical expertise and employment to the existing BreastScreen
team. Lake will support BreastScreen with a robust workforce of highly skilled specialists
from its radiology and radiography teams.
Lake Imaging was approached by BreastScreen Victoria to ensure that the new program
was not lost to the region. However, Lake Imaging would only become involved on the
condition that a biopsy service was made available in Geelong and if it was made the best
possible service in Australia.
Lake Imaging has secured and implemented the latest digital mammography technology,
making it one of the first fully digital BreastScreen sites in Australia. The new facility,
equipped with state of the art technology, would not have been possible without the
assistance of Health minister, the Honourable Bronwyn Pike.
Senior partner and manager of Lake Imaging, Craig Lightfoot is certain the new program will
make a major difference to the lives of many local women, "The new mammography
services, made possible by Lake Imaging, will mean women can receive non surgical
biopsies in Geelong, without the inconvenience and hassle of travelling to Melbourne."
"The new premises of Geelong and South West BreastScreen are fully equipped with
the latest in digital mammography technology. The new equipment includes a
stereotactic biopsy unit which will enable all forms of non-surgical breast biopsy to be
performed in Geelong, "Lightfoot commented.
" Lake Imaging has not only been able to secure access for the women of Geelong and
the South West region to this vital program, we have with the assistance of the minister
for Health, revitalized the service to what I believe will be one of the best screening
services in Australia. This is consistent with our philosophy of providing the best Xray
service in Geelong. "
Staff have just recently demonstrated their dedication and passion by remaining loyal to the
service through a period of many challenges, great uncertainty and instability while the
auspicing arrangements were finalised.
Mr Craig Lightfoot explained the importance of frequent scans and monitoring health,
"Lake Imaging is committed to a holistic approach to health and it is important that women get screened
before symptoms appear. This has many benefits for women and also for the health
system,"
In Victoria, breast cancer causes the most deaths compared to any other cancer in women.
The disease is far more common as women get older and 7 out of 10 deaths occur in
women aged over 50 years.
