Nic Majetic Family Visit
The Geelong region of Lake Imaging celebrates the life of a great man each year with an award named in honour of Nic Majetic.
Nic was truly a one of a kind gentleman, who not only showed an incredible amount of dedication to his work, but inspired and enriched not only the people within the Geelong Radiology Group and SJOG HealthCare Inc, but outside in the Geelong community.
In 2016, Linda West (Radiologist) was a our very worthy recipient of this award named in Nic's memory.
Recently, Nic's grandchildren (Aden and Flyn) and Cynthia Matthews (grandmother of Aden and Flyn) visited our East Court practice to view for the first time the memorial which is proudly displayed in our patient hallway.
Please read the below short biography on the life of Nic Majetic, and acknowledge why Nic's legacy is so important to the staff members of Lake Imaging.
Nic Majetic - One of Natures Gentlemen
In 1974 a 27 year old Yugoslav immigrant, who had arrived in Geelong 10 years previously, speaking no English and having a limited secondary education, commenced training in Radiography at the Geelong Hospital and RMIT.
In those 10 years this remarkably determined but unassuming young man had learnt English and undertaken formal secondary education whilst working on the floor at Ford preparing himself for tertiary studies as a late age student. By this stage he had married and was a loving husband and father to 3 children.
Having completed his Radiography with great distinction and a blend of compassion, good humour and professionalism, Nic Majetic was employed by the Geelong Radiological Clinic (GRC) in 1978.
In 1997, the year before GRC became part of SJOG HealthCare Inc, Nic succumbed to a short but noble battle with cancer.
Nic's unique qualities of humility, compassion, wry humour, justice, hospitality, and great professional skill made him respected by patients, colleagues and the Radiolgoists. Not feeling comfortable in the role of Chief Radiographer, he was appointed Deputy Chief, no appointment of Chief being made.
Nic's photograph and his favourite photographic study (the Lighthouse at Point Lonsdale at Dawn) remind us of this remarkable man as they hang on the wall in the main corridor at the East Court branch of Lake Imaging.
In memory of Nic, the annual Nic Majetic Achievement Award, has been presented since 2001 to the Geelong region staff member nominated and chosen by the staff and the intention is to recognise the person whom the staff feels epitomises and lives out the Mission of Lake Imaging as so wonderfully displayed by the person after whom the award is in memory.
