Regional Australia First Prostate Service Commences In Ballarat

St John of God Ballarat Lake Imaging has commenced the Regional Australia first Ga- 68 PSMA PET-CT prostate service, with specialists and patients waiting in the ready to try the highly enhanced detection examination.

This new innovative Ga-68 PSMA service will aid in the early detection of prostate carcinoma recurrences as well as planning therapies to optimise patient's outcomes.

What exactly is Gallium (Ga-68) PSMA ligand?
A radioactive labelled material that targets specific protein on the surface of the cell membrane. The protein is expressed in high quantity in most types of prostate cancer, allowing detection of early small recurrent /metastatic lesions.
(Ga-68) PSMA ligand is produced in our local lab by highly trained staff.
The lab has been equipped with the latest production and quality assurance equipment to ensure high quality product for ultimate patient safety.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of the Ga-68 PSMA examination, one of the most recent studies included 319 patients with prostate carcinoma showed sensitivity of 77%, specificity of 100%, PPV of 100% and NPV of 91.4 on lesion based analysis (Oromieh et al, 2015). It was concluded that PSMA PET CT has the advantage of detecting lymph node involvement whether they are enlarged or not. All the 319 patient have performed diagnostic CT using IV contrast after injecting the Ga-68 PSMA and before acquiring the PET CT images.
