Short Series: The Insight - Body Composition: New Year, New You
Welcome to part two of the Lake Imaging Short Series - The Insight.

Body compositions are performed on our low dose DEXA machines* and give you an in-depth analysis of just how you are tracking
This is an inexpensive scan with a saving of over 20% if you select a package of 3 rather than 3 individual scans.
What is a Body Composition Scan?
Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is the gold standard in Body Composition and Bone Density. A DEXA scan is a quick, and non-invasive way to accurately and reliably measure bone mineral density, total body fat and total muscle mass.
Participants lie still on a table while a machine arm passes over their entire body, which emits a high- and a low-energy X-ray beam. By measuring the absorption of each beam into parts of the body, technicians can measure for bone mineral density (This is not included in Body Composition scans- only Bone Density scans), lean body mass and fat mass. And since the machine scans body parts individually, the test can also measure the individual body composition of each limb so you can confirm your suspicions that your right leg is indeed just a bit stronger than your left.
This scan is not just for body building individuals, it can also be a great key in providing you with the real facts on how your fitness journey is tracking and give you the results so you can have confidence in ticking off your transformational goals.
Why Should I have a Whole Body Composition Scan at Lake Imaging?
- DEXA is accurate to the gram, and is the quickest and easiest way to monitor the progress of your weight-loss or training regime.
- DEXA delivers a three component scan, which includes fat, lean muscle and bone density.
- Only a DEXA Body Composition scan can provide regional data, including arms, legs and trunk.
- DEXA Body Composition scans enable reproducible results, meaning your progress can be tracked with the highest accuracy possible.
- Individualised advice for fat loss and building lean tissue can be determined from the scan data.
What does a DEXA machine look like?
A DEXA machine consists of a flat bed like platform and a linear scanning arm which moves up and down the length of the platform in order to scan your body from head to toe. The x-ray generator is sits below the bed to help the x-ray images to be produced.
How do the images look?
What does the composition image tell me?
The composition image (shown on the right below) gives you a very simple and effective visualisation of fat distribution and lean tissue throughout the body.
The blue or green areas represent lean tissue. The light blue ‘speckling’ shows areas of fat deposits inside your muscle. The red, orange, yellow areas (or deviations thereof) represent fat densities and distribution, with red being the most dense and yellow the least dense areas of fat in your body. The more ‘red’ in your scan, the more dense fat you have.

Profile: Lisa McCauley
Lisa trained as a Radiographer in New Zealand and graduated in 1996, she has been working within the radiology industry since this time gathering 20 years of experience.
Lisa and Body Composition Scanning:
Lisa has been using a DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorption) scanner for 18 years, primarily for Bone Mineral Density Scans.
More recently, in 2014 Lisa obtained certification and accreditation through the Australian and New Zealand Bone Mineral Society and to date continues to hold this accreditation.
Lake Imaging Geelong adopted the body composition scanning technology in 2014 when it purchased a Medilink Scanner. The Medilink scanner calculates a 4- compartment model (fat, protein, water and minerals) in which is the gold standard in measuring body composition. There are other scanners on the market that are 2-Compartment (fat and fat-free mass) or 3-Comparment (fat, fat free mass and minerals) models. This Medilink scanner is located at East Court in Geelong.
As Lisa is the General X-ray Supervisor within the Geelong region, chances are you may find her at our East Court clinic and performing your body composition scan.
Lisa’s Advice for Body Composition Scans:
Lisa mentons that the radiation dose is extremely low, hence these examinations can be self referred - You do not need a referral from a medical professional to have a body composition scan.
Lake Imaging can give patients a trend comparison report as the patient progresses through repeat scans. Lisa recommends taking out the package of 3 in order to fully track how your progress throughout your long term fitness endeavour.
This package of 3 scans must be used over a 12 month period, with scans needing to be at least 3 months apart. This gap is necessary in order to gather results that will effectively show the changes that have occurred. There is no advantage of having 2 scans inside a 3 month period, as the body does not have a chance to fully take on any substantial changes within the body.
Lisa stresses that body composition scans are not just for body builders or gym junkies - they are for anyone who has a goal that they would like to achieve and would like to truly track their health and fitness journey.
Throughout her time scanning patients, Lisa has saw some remarkable body improvements on patients who have taken out a package of 2 or 3 scans. These comparative results give the patient a real sense of accomplishment after all of the hard work they have put in to achieving their goals.
“When people are on their fitness and weight loss journey, they may not see the scales changing much - but that doesn’t mean they are failing in achieving their goals. Our body composition trend reports (on follow up scans) show the progress and changes internally, as well as where in the body these changes have occurred.”
